Krugerrand
This 1 oz gold coin from South Africa was the first full ounce bullion coin. They’ve been made since the 1967 and sold in the U.S. since gold became legal. Of all the major gold coins, it is the least expensive. Usually it trades $15 – $17 less than other 1 oz coins. Of course, when you sell you’ll also get less. They come in fractional amounts of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/2 oz.
IRS reporting may be required when you sell.
Recently, Proof versions have become promoted again but the resale market pays no premium for Proof coins so save your money and buy uncirculated coins for the low premium over gold spot.
For many years it was illegal to bring Krugerra
nds into the U.S. because of apartheid. However, it was never illegal to trade the coins already here. Since then new coins arrive regularly. The biggest consequence of these past restrictions was that other coins such as the US Eagles overtook the Krugerrand in popularity.
